Product Details

A crowd gathers at Brant Point lighthouse to see the landing of two seaplanes, April 18, 1918.

The first airplanes that came to Nantucket in 1917 were unannounced. People ran to get a close look. On April 17, 1918, the Naval Air Station in Chatham, Mass., alerted the town before sending four hydroplanes. Three R-9s arrived at Brant Point; one spun off at landing to Coatue. The schools declared a holiday and crowds came to watch.
