Product Details

A large crowd at Jetties beach, both spectators and swimmers. Many umbrellas are in view and one carriage is parked on the beach, circa 1900.

Photographer: Henry S. Wyer

Jetties Beach was as popular a spot for swimming and socializing in the 1900s as it is now. After the harbor became progressively more inaccessible, the town of Nantucket asked the federal government for assistance in 1800. Eighty-one years later work began on the western jetty, with granite rip-rap. In 1884, work began on the eastern jetty.
