Steamships River Queen and Island Home at Steamboat Wharf, circa 1870.
The steamer Island Home was built in 1855. The first boat owned by the Nantucket and Cape Cod Steamboat Company, it sailed from Hyannis until the Old Colony Railroad extended its line to Woods Hole in 1872; the boat then sailed to Nantucket from there. The River Queen was in service to Nantucket from 1875; during the Civil War, however, it was used by General Ulysses S. Grant as his private dispatch boat.
